Zoom into Zoom!
Despite the transition back to life before the COVID-19 Pandemic, virtual lectures have remained a trend for convenience and flexibility. These online meetings are designed to be highly collaborative and provide all those attending the ability to remain connected despite the distance. Such conferences serve as an excellent medium to connect and engage with large audiences. As schools transitioned towards an online module of learning, ZOOM is another prominent Internet tool that rose to popularity. This is due to the software's ability to provide students with a hands-on and collaborative classroom environment from the safety of their homes. This is all due to its many student-supported features that still make ZOOM a popular choice for meeting today.
Some useful teaching features found in ZOOM include text chat and screen sharing. With this aspect, teachers are able to send messages to students during class and likewise. Messages can be sent to the class as a whole or privately to certain individuals. This is an effective way to communicate with students without straying from the topic at hand. Secondly, another useful feature located on ZOOM is the screen sharing option. In my opinion, I believe that this is Zoom’s most useful teaching feature as it allows learners to see what is on their instructor’s screen. Examples include sharing a PowerPoint presentation, website, videos or anything that may be useful in class. Such features allow students to remain informed and engaged with what they are currently learning.
From personal experience, when teaching online simplicity is important for all students. Zoom has recently launched a new whiteboard feature that proves to be a great addition to the online classroom. With this feature, teachers now have the ability to create whiteboards before class starts. The immediate access allows teachers to upload pre-created templates to use during lectures. I find this new feature to be similar to the G-Suite app JamBoard. Both applications allow the teachers to share a digital interactive whiteboard where students are able to apply and manipulate on their own. It is another incredible resource that promotes normal classroom engagement through a computer screen.
Overall, Zoom is another highly effective and easy-to-navigate resource that would be beneficial in online instruction. The features the software contains are centered around the aspect of collaboration and engagement. Both of which are crucial during instructional time.
